Climbs 100
Rocktype Quartzite
Altitude 699m a.s.l
Faces NW
Steep, bullet-hard quartzite with routes of up to three pitches across grades 5.3 to 5.14. Even many of the easy routes offer exceptional exposure and angle. The majority are trad lines, with rare sport routes except at the Hanging Garden and North Face areas. A lot of people who've been to both places compare the climbing experience here to New York's better-known 'Gunks. The northwest aspect results in the crag staying shady and relatively cool compared to surrounding regions.
A designated parking lot for climbers has been built in cooperation between N.C. State Parks and the Carolina Climbers Coalition. Hike-in trail runs uphill from the lot, with the nearer east end (Sentinel Buttress) accessible in ~15 minutes, whereas the eastern end (North Face) is closer to 25 minutes.
This crag is in a state park, so abide by rules listed at the trailhead. A permit must be filled in before starting and is available at the information board in the car park.
