We are pleased to announce the winners of the third annual UKC/UKH Mountain Photography Awards presented by Berghaus.
Each year the top five voted photos from each category of the UKC/UKH photo galleries are looked over by our Photo Editor Mark Glaister. Mark chooses the winning photo in each category. He also chooses three overall top photos from all the categories.

Overall Winners
1st - Stepping onto the Rainbow
Wins £250 worth of Berghaus kit of his choice
Mark Glaister commented: Simon’s shot has captured not only the relief of the rainbow feature that gives the slab its name but also the movement of the climber as he is stepping up on to it. The composition is pretty much perfect and leaves in no doubt the sense of what it means to tackle this iconic piece of Welsh slate.
2nd - Tre Cime di Lavaredo by night
Wins £200 worth of Berghaus kit of his choice
Mark Glaister commented: James’s after dark image of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo combines a textbook composition with great technical expertise and of course three of the Italian Dolomites' greatest faces.
3rd - The Potato Picker - Fiesta de los Biceps
Wins £150 worth of Berghaus kit of his choice
Mark Glaister commented:Dan does it once again with his unique take on the unpredictable permanence of the Spanish Riglos conglomerate. The pic took some setting up and that’s a considerable amount of rope out too!
Group Winners
The selection below is the winner in each category but doesn't include the three overall winners above.
Trad climbing - David 'Nails' Ewing feeling the pressure of Fair Head!
Wins a Berghaus Arete 35 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: A classic shooting angle captures the story of climbing way above the shoreline at Fairhead in N.Ireland, on what looks to be a neat crackline. My only reservation is that I would have gone for a big cam rather than the nuts looking at the width of the crack in shot?
Winter Climbing - Mad Hatter's Gully
Wins a Berghaus Arete 45 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: A great action shot taken ‘on the hoof’ of a rarely climbed Scottish classic in lean conditions. The drapes of thin icicles frame the action nicely – its is interesting to contrast the conditions in the picture with those later in the same season - http://www.ukclimbing.com/images/dbpage.html?id=217412
Landscape - The Shining
Wins a Berghaus Arete 45 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: An evocative landscape of Lake Padarn and the Llanberis Pass with Castell Dolbadarn picked out in silhouette. One of many magnificent Snowdonia images on the UKC database from Mr Mills.
Expedition and Alpine - Roger Knox on the Brenva Spur
Wins a Berghaus Arete 35 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: Ben's shot captures not just the superb evening light, but also the climber within the endless mountain environment that surrounds them.
Sport Climbing -
Wins a Berghaus Arete 45 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: As many observed in the comments attached to this image - it looks like it was going to hurt! - but didn't apparently. A fine action shot capturing the fall without blur in what looks to be less than ideal light conditions.
Bouldering - Ned Feehally on The Ace
Wins a Berghaus Arete 35 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: Nick Brown’s image of a near airborne Ned Feehally perhaps? latching the final sloper on The Ace at Stanage. A fine study of what it takes to conquer this hard boulder problem.
Biking - The Pamir Mountains
Wins a Berghaus Arete 35 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: A thought provoking image of a very remote and wild looking part of the planet. However if you delve in to the blog of UKC user Sherlock Tales http://sherlocktales.blogspot.co.uk/ you will see that this is just the tiny tip of a huge berg of travels by her and her bike.
Running - Crib Goch Run on a Bank Holiday Morning
Wins a Berghaus Arete 35 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: Matt’s shot pretty much sum’s up what most UK based fell runner/climbers would describe as a perfect day out - high up on Crib Goch with the cloud anchored firmly down in the valley.
Winter Walking - Winter Scotland
Wins a Berghaus Arete 45 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: Al’s picture of a lone figure high above a wintery looking Scottish backdrop is very atmospheric. The scene combines a good deal of both sunlight and shade, which is never easy to handle when photographing snowscapes.
Scrambling - Cuillin Rooftop: Cameron on Sgurr Thearlaich
Wins a Berghaus Arete 35 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: A days worth of the best scrambling in the UK awaits the lucky person in this nicely composed study of the Cuillin by Kevin Woods.
Hill Walking - Descending Beinn a'Chuirn
Wins a Berghaus Arete 45 Rucksack
Mark Glaister commented: Allan’s sublime image of a break in the clouds flags up many scenarios faced by hill walkers everywhere, whether it is relief at being able to see the way ahead – or trepidation of heading up into more challenging conditions.
Many thanks to Berghaus for their kind support of the brilliant photography on UKC and UKH.
