In 2003 Vilane became the first black African to summit Everest, a huge deal for someone from impoverished roots, with no background in mountaineering, and one that earned him the praise of Nelson Mandela. He has since climbed all the Seven Summits, and many more, but despite his many achievements remains inspiringly humble.
