A great crag just north of Whaligoe is known locally as Ellen's Geo but the main wall is actually situated 200m south of Ellen's Geo and is clearly seen on the approach. The crag has a variety of good routes, mainly in the mid E grades.
Parking as for Whaligoe steps ( an impressive inlet where Herring were landed then manually carried, usually by the women back up the 300 odd steps). Head down towards the steps but access the coastal path around the left side of the building following the JohnOGroats trail. Head North for approx 15 minutes until the smooth walls on the headland come clearly into view.
Be wary of disturbing birds during nesting season - as the guano evidence in the guidebook photo clearly shows, birds are present here.
Approach map in SMC wired guide is for Ellen's Geo, but the topo is Ellen's Wall, the south-facing wall just S of the Geo. ellis - 19/May/23 |
