Rocktype Trachyte
Altitude 1362m a.s.l
Faces NE
A prominent crag high above the village of Mont Dore, and on a spur of the Puy de Sancy Massif. There are multipitch routes, single pitch routes and bouldering developed at the cliff along with a municipal Via Ferrata. The rock type is trachyandesite (sancyite).
Unlike some other crags in Auvergne, climbing at "Capu" without a car is doable. It's around a 30 minute walk up the hill from the charming mountain resort town of Mont-Dore, which is served by the TER bus from Clermont-Ferrand (around 14 euros for a return ticket). You can also take the funicular straight up the hill from Mont-Dore which cuts the walk down to the same distance as from the parking lot. It is also bikeable from Mont-Dore on paved and gravel roads the whole way.
