A good crag with a small set of steep routes. Many of the pitches are quite long - up to 35m - and sustained. There are several other developed cliffs on this rocky hillside.
The crag faces west and stays in the shade until 2pm or later - a useful consideration in hot weather. It faces towards the prevailing winds, but is quite sheltered and dries quickly unless the rain has been particularly persistent.
Follow the D8 from Tarascon-sur-Ariège to Niaux. In the centre of the village, take the road on your left, signposted to the Grotte de Niaux. After 100m, turn left which leads to the show-cave entrance and large car park by a huge iron art installation. Note that the gate a few hundred metres before the cave entrance may be locked shortly after the cave closes to the public. If you're expecting a late finish it would be wise to park outside the gate and walk from there.
From the parking, walk round the front of the iron sculpture and descend a path (slippery after rain) for 5 minutes, before veering right at a junction with a red arrow on a tree. The path then rises gradually up leftwards for 10 minutes before a sharp right switchback. About 45m after this, look out for a small path (cairn) on your left. This smaller path leads up and then leftwards to the crags.
Currently off-limits due to nesting Bearded Vultures (Lammergeier) until further notice. 21/3/21 Laramadness - 21/Mar/21 |
