This secluded and peaceful dale contains several small buttresses at various points up its 1 mile length. A quarter of the routes are sport routes.
The current access situation is very delicate in the upper dale and it is probably best to climb somewhere else in spring and summer (wildlife SSSI) since a breach of the situation could cause problems in other much better areas. Windy Slab, The Rim and Cove have no access problems.
The landowners (Derbyshire Wildlife Trust) remain concerned with climbing at this site, but will tolerate low-key activity that doesn't damage vegetation/scree slopes. They have also requested no further development occurs. Although climbing is a permitted activity on CRoW land, placing bolts requires landowner permision. For full details please see the BMC 'From Horseshoe to Harpur Hill' guidebook.
Note: the hard sport routes in Thirst House Cave have now been de-equipped by DWT.
