A very unusual crag, Acqua Rocca is a narrow basalt face which has mostly been waterworn to a black glossy finish. It has many cracks and features so that climbing becomes possible on this weirdest of surfaces. It is situated high on the slopes of Mount Etna in the midst of beautiful woodland and is best climbed in the summer or a spring/autumn morning. Thee are 20m single pitch and multi pitch climbs here up to 70m with the former known to be recently rebolted.
Take the SP92 from Zafferana Etnea towards the cable car station and Rifugio Sapienza at Etna-Sud. After 6 miles there is a large parking area on the right called Piano del Vescovo. From the carpark the crag can be seen on the slopes above and a path leads straight towards it past some ruins and through the woods.
Approach time: 25mins
