Coum Mahon Overview © Sean Martin
Coum Mahon/Mahon Valley is a mountain crag located in the Comeragh Mountains in the South East of Ireland in County Waterford.
This is a large valley offering Summer trad, scrambling, mixed climbing and rarely ice climbing when the falls freeze over.
There are a number of climbing areas within the valley, ranging from 250m to 1.5km from the main car park.
The climbing on offer is on conglomerate and the usual caveats apply when climbing on this unpredictable rock. There are sections of sandstone and these can be loose. The climbs here are rarely repeated and are often vegetated. Dampness can be an issue and depending on the aspect and amount of vegetation one to three days should be allowed for drying after heavy rain.
The large car park at GR314080 provides ample parking, easily holding 60 cars. There are also two smaller car parks, one above and one below the main one. However caution should be exercised as there have been a number of break ins here in the past ten years, so follow the usual rules when leaving your car for long periods.
The valley contains Mahon Falls, one of the more popular tourist destinations in the region and the car parks can fill up on good weather days during the holidays. That said
For other peaks and crags in the local area refer to the OSi Discovery Series map no. 75.
All climbs are within a 45 minute walk of the car park.
