A few multipitch sport routes in the Plaisir category all with abseil descents, Diagonale being the easiest. Harder, more traditional routes, some by the Remy brothers, exist as well. The routes in this category are given here with UIAA grades from the SAC Urner Alpen 2 guide (2003). Some of these may have been re-equipped in the meantime, currently outside the knowledge of the moderator(s) (2019).
The east facing wall is situated in a gorge and routes can be hot in the morning to midday sun, which disappears quickly in the evening. The busy road at the bottom spoils the atmosphere a bit, although it does mean quick access.
The gorge is home to the iconic Devil's bridge, former gateway to Andermatt and the Gotthard pass and now superseeded with more modern constructions. A memorial to the Russian General Suvorov, whose army attempted to drive the French out of Switzerland in 1799 during the French Revolutionary Wars, is situated nearby the bridge, and the via ferrata Diavolo is nearby the memorial.
Currently (July 2017) the parking(as per plaisir ost) is blocked by the construction work. However a little bit down the pass is a large layby which gives access to the walkers path and bridge over the river. Mike-W-99 - 11/Jul/17 |
