Smuggler's Notch is one the premier ice climbing venues in the North Eastern United States. There are hundreds of climbs here from WI 2 to WI 5+ as well as mixed routes, and routes with an "alpine" feel. The rock is pretty poor, crumbly stuff, but there is some rock climbing here in the summer, as well as bouldering.
A fantastic area for ice and mixed.
Park either on the Jeffersonville side (just past Smuggler's Notch ski resort) or on the Stowe side (just past Stowe ski resort). Walk up the unplowed road (highway 108 in the summer, closed to vehicles in winter) until you see climbs - then go climb them. Many of the climbs are clustered around the top of the notch. Watch out for, and be respectful of, cross country skiers, dog walkers, snowshoe-ers and other pedestrians using the road. Be careful of snowmobliers, it's not unusual for people to be hit by idiots on sleds.
You are allowed to camp in the notch in winter.
