The Climbing Hangar are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Health and Safety Officer to join our team and help us continue to place the safety of our staff and customers at the forefront of our service.

Salary: circa £40k per annum

Job Status: Permanent 

Hours: 40 per week (flexible work pattern)

Location: Home Based (estate wide travel required)

Additional requirements: This role requires the ability to travel to sites across England, Wales, and Scotland

Main job activities:  

  • As the Health and Safety Officer you will develop the health and safety policies, procedures, risk assessments and processes for TCH, both at existing/ new sites and the support office. 
  • You will drive exceptional health and safety standards across TCH estate. Where actions have been identified through the audit, risk management program or enforcement visits, you will ensure a plan is in place to achieve compliance. 
  • You will provide advice and guidance to TCH teams on internal policy and process and help to ensure compliance across the group.  
  • Produce regular reports on health and safety performance and KPI's to the Ops team with the ability to articulate findings and recommendations in both written and verbal format. 
  • Review health and safety performance data (accidents / incidents, audits and member service feedback), draw conclusions and identify clear and tangible actions to drive continual improvement. 
  • Create & review existing risk assessments annually in line with The Climbing Hangar' Risk Management Strategy  
  • Ensure risk assessments are undertaken internally or by third party experts where complex or specialist issues need to be considered, for example, environmental risk, asbestos, legionella, or fire in association with Regional and other specialist experts.  
  • Oversee the COSHH database and provide advice to managers and staff where necessary 
  • Implement and maintain our health and safety management system in line with HSE guidance HSG65 and maintain a development plan to drive continual improvement 
  • Develop and review any Emergency Action Plans ensuring that they are tested frequently in line with statutory duties and risk assessment outcomes.   
  • Oversee any sites that are operating under Construction (Design Management) Regulations, ensuring that works that fall within the scope of the regulation are being appropriately managed and duty holders are aware of and discharging their duties.   
  • Develop an internal Health and Safety audit fir sites and key suppliers and ensure that they are audited regularly based on their risk profile   

Staff Training 

  • You will devise and deliver appropriate training for staff to meet legal obligations in respect of Health and Safety, Fire Safety and Transport Safety. Where specialist external training is required, you will co-ordinate and manage this in partnership with the Recruitment & Training Manager.  
  • You will maintain Health and Safety training records and ensure that training is renewed as appropriate. 

Presentation and communication 

  • Attend Regional and GM Meetings to deliver training and consultation on health and safety matters and to support delivery of operational change into the business.  
  • Manage the Health & Safety platform across all sites and manage the account with a 3rd party, supporting sites with issues  
  • Assist the Head of Building Development to review performance of existing contractors.  
  • Handling issues and resolving problems 
  • Be the first point of liaison with any regulators and authorities, ensuring that Regional Managers/ Senior Leadership Team are made aware of any recommendations and formal notices 
  • Follow up with key stakeholders after serious accidents or incidents to ensure that any actions identified during the investigation are closed off following completion.  
  • To provide support and guidance on internal health and safety processes and procedures to site and support teams.  
  • With the support of Regional Managers take the lead on responding to/ dealing with legal challenges related to H&S/ Fire Safety/ Transport.  
  • Delivering great service through the team 
  • You will promote a positive safety culture, prepare content for internal health and safety communications and campaigns 
  • Support TCH teams at new sites in implementing TCH's health and safety management system in preparation for when the site is open to view, ensuring that any site specific hazards are identified and included within the site facilities General Risk Assessments.  
  • To conduct shadow audits on our third party, health and safety consultants to enable us to continually improve their service delivery.  
  • Be the interface between TCH teams, our fire engineering company and operational teams to ensure that fire risk assessment actions identified are proportionate and actioned to completion. 
  • To carry out follow-up visits to any site following a low scoring audit (or as requested), to provide expert support and guidance on how to best achieve compliance and improved health and safety culture.  

You will (Essential requirements):  

  • Hold a level 3 health and safety qualification (NEBOSH Certificate or equivalent). 
  • Be a member of IOSH at Technical level with a structured CPD in place. 
  • Have at least 3 years of experience within a multi-site health and safety role is essential. Preferably within leisure, although not essential. 
  • Have experience of implementing health and safety management systems, including policy writing., risk profiling, and development of strategic KPIs.  
  • Have experience in food hygiene and hold a level 3 food hygiene qualification  
  • Be proficient in the use of common business software programs, including Microsoft Office.  
  • Have excellent people skills and the ability to communicate effectively in written format and oral presentation.  
  • Be autonomous and have the ability to manage your own diary and work in a fluid nature around the needs of the business.  
  • Solid experience collaborating with other business areas to meet company objectives and standards. 

It would be desirable if:  

  • You hold a level 6 health and safety qualification (NEBOSH Diploma, NCRQ Diploma in Applied Health and Safety) although not essential.  
  • You are a member of IOSH at Graduate or Chartered level with a structured CPD in place although not essential. 
  • You have experience of working with an outsourced health and safety consultancy. 
  • You have practical experience implementing HSG65  
  • You have experience with Legionella risk management and hold a qualification
