Janja Garnbret Becomes First Woman to Onsight 8c

Olympic gold medalist Janja Garnbret has become the first woman to onsight an 8c sport route by climbing Fish Eye at Oliana, Spain. The grade of 8b+ had been onsighted by several women but was first achieved by Josune Bereziartu in 2006. The 22-year-old Slovenian climber has accomplished nearly everything in the world of competition climbing and there was a great deal of speculation over what she could achieve when she turned her hand to rock.

Shortly after Janja onsighted Fish Eye, she onsighted her second 8c - American Hustle - also at Oliana. Fanatic Climbing also report that Janja climbed the crux on La Dura Dura, Adam Ondra's desperate 9b+, during her warm-up.

While Janja is clearly no slouch when it comes to rock climbing, she has a relative lack of experience compared to her almost legendary competition career. In 2015, she flashed Rollito Sharma (8c) and a year later flashed La Fabelita (8c), both at Santa Linya, Spain. In 2018, she climbed her first 9a with an ascent of Selecció Natural, at Santa Linya.

Janja's competition climbing resume includes back to back World Championship Golds, eight overall World Cup titles, a clean sweep of the 2019 Boulder season - the only person to ever do so - and a triple World Championship win in the same year. And of course, Olympic Gold.

You can watch Janja along with Shauna Coxsey, Brooke Raboutou and Miho Nonaka in a new film called The Wall - Climb For Gold at Kendal Mountain Festival later this month.

Festival dates are 18-21 November and you can explore the full programme here - www.kendalmountainfestival.com

I hope she is planning to get back on La Dura Dura. It would be great if Janja could knock off a few of the world's hardest routes before the next comp season!
