Hello there woodland folk,

Do you have any recommendations for woodland crags in the UK?

How nice it is to be amongst the trees. Even better to climb amongst them. Just wondering if people can recommend any crags or climbing areas within woodlands across the UK.

Thanks

Anywhere in the Wye Valley - except for Symonds Yat which is currently "out of bounds".

Except they've cut down the trees.

I was soloing and bouldering in the lovely Wye Valley Woods only yesterday, at  The Wyastone. Folklore has it that if you crawl through the hollow tree three times backwards, you will summon the forest troll, who will demonstrate how to send any problem you choose.

Agden Rocher is located in Oak woodland with the finest view in the eastern Peak (come at me, Bamford).

The Dewerstone is set in lovely ancient oak forest and, as mentioned above, the Wye Valley crags - Shorn Cliff is particularly shaded and bosky!

As you are in Tideswell, what about all the wooded crags in Cheedale and Water-cum-Jolly, 2 minutes drive from your house?

Personally I think wooded crags are the devils work... extra insects, more shade and damp and no cooling breezes in the summer.

And  Wharncliffe Crags are only a cockstride away. But you are right about the view from Agden.

Harrison's Rocks and most of the other Southern Sandstone.

Clogwyn Cyrau and the various small crags in the woods above Betws.

Craig Bwlch y Moch (Tremadog) and the other Tremadoc crags.

Craig Y Tonnau

Carreg Alltrem is in some thick forestry.

Pass of Ballater feels like there are lots of trees around, even though it's not really in a wood.

And not forgetting  Creag Dubh na Caillich the best woodland crag in Scotland.

Plenty of bouldering in various wooded areas in Leicestershire and also "proper" climbing inside a wood at The Outwoods

Note: there's a reason why proper is in quotes 😁

Glen Nevis has nice birchwoods and Dunkeld is in mature forest.

Black Crag in Troutdale is beautiful with Quayfoot, Bolderstone and Wodens nearby.

The low level Dartmoor crags are in incredible, twisted dwarf oak forests.

I grew up in the Foest of Dean climbing in the Wye Valley, so generally think of woodland crags as dank, slow drying, insect infected places, so it's good to be reminded of their finer points!

A lot of the Wye Valley crags have the additional benefit that the woodland continues up the route and provides the belays. And sometimes the only decent gear on the route.

I have to mention  Cademan Wood and Broad Hill since this is one of the big appeals of the location!

Armathwaite in the Eden valley, alongside the river is hard to beat for sylvan beauty.

Root Route and 3 Tree Climb come to mind.
