I've just read on UK Caving the sad news that film maker Sid Perou has died in Thailand (his home) at the age of 87. He did create some climbing films but it was his pioneering caving output that he will probably be best remembered for. His BBC series 'Beneath the Pennines' (1977) documenting wetsuit--clad potholers exploring in the Dales really fired my own caving journey. Farewell Sid, your work inspired lots of us to get out and explore the world.

Almost certainly best known to those on here for the famous Rock Athlete TV series:

Ah, yes. I was much more into caving when they came out. Is that where Ron makes his famous 'come on arms' comment?

Climbing films were slim pickings back then, appointment TV if you saw them in the schedule. One of my favourite runs is nicknamed 'Come on legs (do your stuff)!' in tribute to that film of Ron - https://youtu.be/0WlDugUn5cQ?si=vO4Em6W3yn01_897&t=1490

Oh no, hadn't heard that news. That's a big loss to the UK outdoors in general

The Ron Fawcett video really has become a classic piece of filmmaking. A sad loss.

A sad loss. I've never been remotely tempted by caving, but I remember watching Beneath The Pennines as a child and being fascinated. And later Balloon Over Yorkshire, where he shot film while hung on a teather under a hot air baloon. Inspiring stuff.

RIP. He uploaded a lot of his climbing films online and I regularly recommend them as some of the best climbing films I've ever seen. Fingertip Phenomenon stands out and is a great introduction to his work -  youtube.com/watch?v=TmBDlzOQp0c&
