There is a new well constructed path to the base of the route. It avoids all the fallen trees and is easy to find and follow if you take the path that says ‘ferrata’.
Follow this sign up the hill before it starts zig zagging right. This sign is about 100m up the main track, after you have crossed the bridge over the river (which is where the main path to the VF starts from, leaving the Val di Passa road in Val San Nicolo).
There will be another sign about 10 minutes from here pointing you right - which leads to the base of the route. Both signs use the abbreviated ‘M 4’ to direct you.
